Research & Planning - Pop Collage

College Research On Magazines from hollie22

I have researched images of female and male pop artists, female and male pop groups, 2 magazine covers of female and male models, different colour schemes and different magazine mastheads.
I have done this because I feel it is suitable to research this as my music magazine genre is indie pop. I researched the mastheads and colours so I know what colours will be suitable for my magazine genre and also so I know what mastheads look like so I can do maybe a style similar. I feel this research will help me when creating my magazine as it has lots of codes and conventions of what is on and in a pop magazine.

Research & Planning - VoiceThread of Music Magazine

This is my voice thread analysis of a Billboard music magazine cover.

Research & Planning - Analysis Of 2 Music Magazines

1. - Billboard Magazine Cover.
This magazine cover has the codes and conventions of a stereotypical music magazine cover are that it has a masthead, main image, cover lines, the three rule cover scheme and 2 fonts. The masthead stands out on the magazine because it is in black bold letters and it has blue and green in the spaces. Also the magazine is well known and people know what it is even though Katy's main image covers it. The main image also helps attract the audience to buy the magazine because the primary target audience is people who are fans of Katy Perry who want to read about why she is in the magazine. Furthermore people will want to buy the magazine because they like the content of the magazine. The magazine has 6 cover lines that will attract the audience because they can see what type of stories are going to be in the magazine and see if they want to read them types before they buy it.

Research & Planning - Contents

Research & Planning - Finished Front Page Of My Magazine

My College Magazine Cover Analysis
This is my finished front cover of my college magazine. I have used the codes and conventions of a magazine which are: a masthead, barcode and price, issue of my magazine and what edition it is, cover lines, colour scheme and a main image on for my background. I used 'Hyde Clarendon Lifestyle' as my title because I think it will be suitable as it is giving the reader a taste of what the lifestyle is like here at the college. I have used the cover lines of the summer results, enrichment activities and a map of the college because I think that new students at the college may want to join or know where their subjects are. I used the summer results because I feel that people may want to know how the college did in the past exams. I used the barcode because it is a code and convention of a magazine. I chose 99p as my price because I feel it is suitable price for a college student. I chose the main image because I think it shows the reader that the students here enjoy the college and enjoy the subjects that they have chosen. I think the font sizes are correct because I have the masthead with the biggest title. I have 'hyde' in capital letters and a bigger and different font because I wanted it to stand out. I made 'Clarendon Lifestyle' in a smaller and different font but kept it bold because thought it would look well structured and make my magazine more unique. I kept my font the same for the cover lines because they all have the same importance on the front cover of my magazine. I decided to make the important points on my cover lines in bold and in a larger font because I want them points to stand out to my reader to grab their attention. My magazine follows the three colour rule but I have varied them. I have used different shades of purple rather than using a distinct purple colour. You can tell that my cover and contents page are from the same magazine because I have carried out the purple shade on to the contents page from the cover. You can also tell because the images have the same people/person on and the fonts are carried throughout. The photographs are appropriate and well taken because they are clear. They are also appropriate because it shows that the people in the photos are smiling and looking happy in the college and shows that they are enjoying their subjects are the college. I think I have enough cover lines on my cover because they a spaced out and I feel that if i added more it would become and look cramped together and wouldn't look very appropriate as a magazine cover. I have appropriately used the ICT because I used photoshop to make my cover page and I used indesign to create my contents page. I had to manipulate my photograph by cropping it. I had to crop it to make it into a medium closeup shot. The things I dislike about my cover page is my choice of where I put my barcode and price. If I was to redo this task I would change the position and place them at the bottom of my magazine. The things I like about my magazine cover is the fonts and the background image. I like them because I think they all go well together and make it look like a suitable college magazine.

Planning & Research - Possible Images For My Magazine

These are the images me and Carlyn took went out around Hyde Clarendon College to use for our magazine. I decided to use the AS Media sheet as a prop which I said I would use on my prop list. We took pictures in the library where students in our college go to study. We also took images on the grounds of the college. Lastly, we took the images in a corridor of our college. This where we took to images together smiling at our AS Media sheet, our expression shows we are enjoying this subject.

Research & Planning - Magazine Draft 2

This is a second draft of my college magazine for Hyde Clarendon Lifestyle. I have improved my magazine from the first draft I posted of my magazine. It has been improved because I have added a title and a barcode. I still have improvements which are to add cover lines to the front of my magazine and a price.

Research & Planning - Magazine Draft 1

This is the start of my college magazine. On this draft I have added the title of my magazine and the issue of my magazine. I have decided to do my don't colour in black for the moment because I needed to get my main image for my magazine on another day. I have already used 2 of the 3 fonts I can use on my magazine and I will continue to use these whilst adding another.

Research & Planning - Costume and Prop List

This is my costume and prop list for what I will need to create my magazine. I will need the things on my list to make my magazine suitable and to look like a reliable source. I will need a college student to be on the front of my magazine to show the reader that my magazine is about the college and includes students and facts about the college. I will need college books as evidence that my student is in college and is studying here at Hyde Clarendon. I will need my model to be in a college environment to show the reader that my magazine is about the college. I will also have my model wearing their own clothes and also wearing their ID badges.

Sorry for the mistake of 'on' instead of 'own' in my costume and prop list.

Research & Planning - More Audience Response

This is another video of my audience response. I went round to interview students at Hyde to see what they think would be suitable ideas for my magazine.

Research & Planning - 3 Mastheads

These are 3 mastheads I decided the font and colour of. When we were given these names we had a challenge of making the font and colour suitable for the title of the masthead. I chosen to do a dark red colour and the capital font because I feel they represent the title well. I chosen to do popworld in a more fancy font with the colour pink because I feel the title of this masthead is more girly. Lastly I used the gold colour font for the masthead popcorn because it is a similar colour to popcorn and it represents it well.

Research & Planning - College Magazine Analysis

This is my analysis of a college magazine cover which I picked to write about. I wrote about the colour scheme, the main image, the masthead, the codes and conventions that the magazine follows, the unique selling point that the magazine has, the cover lines the magazine has, its target audience and why the main image may be over the title.

Research & Planning - Medium Close Up Shots

These are the image shots I will be using on my magazine cover for my college magazine. I will be using these images using a student as my model.

Research & Planning - College Magazine Analysis

This college magazine follows codes and conventions of other genre types of magazines. It has a masthead, publication/selling line, cover lines, issue date, main image and a price and barcode.

The colours used all go well together blend well. The issue of this magazine was from summer 2010. The colours used (orange, blue, yellow and white) have connotations of summer because they are bright and stand out on the light grey back ground. The colours give summery imagery in your mind.

The publication/selling line of this front cover says 'your exclusive guide to everything hip, hot & happening'. This would help appeal to the target audience of college students because it presents them with a magazine that interests them more about the college.

This magazine cover has many cover lines. The college alternates the different size, colour and font on the front page. I think doing this appeals to its target audience more because the cover lines maybe related to the college/educated and some are other cover lines that may  interest the students.

The issue date is at the top of the magazine cover. The font is in black until it says 'summer 2010'. I think they did this because it makes 'summer 2010' stand out more on the magazine cover. In conclusion to this, it may be more effective because some of the students may be more interested in the summer issue than any other.

The main image is of a male wearing a white suit. I think this image is suitable for a summer magazine because white is quite summery therefore, a white suit will be suitable for summer. His facial expression and his body language looks like he is relaxed and acting casual. He blends well with the background colour which makes the masthead and cover lines stand out more.

The barcode and price of the magazine is a stereotypical code and convention of magazines. I think it is suitable for the magazine because the audience need to know how much the magazine they are buying will cost.

Research & Planning - Photoshop Challenge

This is my Photoshop challenge. I followed the instructions of a blue background, century gothic red font with a drop shadow and we had to chose a person for the challenge and change their hair colour and put a border around them.

Research & Planning - InDesign Tutorial

In this tutorial of InDesign, I have learnt how to make columns, add pictures, add a background colour and add text on to InDesign. When I did this I copied and pasted a text before I used the text on to the InDesign page. When I pasted my text in my first column it carried the text on in the next column. Once I added the text I next added a title and then placed an image on the piece. Afterwards I then changed the background and it came up on the top of my text, i right clicked and sent the background to the back.

Research & Planning - CD Cover

This is an CD cover that I made by using 4 images. The images I had to use were a CD, trombone, musical notes and a page of notes. I named my CD cover 'Golden Classics' because I decided to keep the trombone in colour to make it stand out. Once I had my images in place I then decided to change the opacity so the viewer can still see the trombone and the music sheet underneath the images. I also kept the musical notes with colour because they are coming out of the trombone and it could suggest they are 'golden' tunes. I also made the musical sheet background into waves, so it has a better effect.

Research & Planning - Photoshop Skin Tutorial

From doing this exercise, I have learnt how to edit images by using Photoshop. I have learnt how to remove and cover spots or marks on faces. I have also learnt how to do eye make up, blusher, lipstick and to change her hair colour. I also learnt how to soften and take the shine off her skin. To help me get to this point on the image, I used the brush tool and changed it to the different brushes to do each of the different make up or hair effect. Furthermore, I know how to zoom in and out.
